PORTRAIT OF THE PRINCESS VEST
In Walter Frier’s 1731 painting, the Princess of Zanzibar was cast in the language of European portraiture, ornamented yet distant. In the DAP LUXE loom, she reclaims her ocean throne. This vest resurrects her presence as navigator and witness, weaving together threads of resistance, royal bloodlines, and sea-borne commerce.
The vest captures the princess in woven relief, her crown and gaze glinting under twilight threads of amber, seafoam, and indigo. The backdrop, an oceanic sky rendered in layered warp yarns, grounds her royal form between earth and sea. The fringe-lined pockets echo coral reefs and seaborne trade routes, while the the garment’s sleeveless form symbolizes emancipation from decorative stillness, freedom clothed in memory.
